Table 7.11. Frequency of Navajo and historic components with artifacts by time period.

Artifact Group Unknown 1600-1863 1868-1930 1930-1980 Multiple Period Total
No. % No. % No. % No. % No. % No. %
Native Only 17 28.3 31 51.7 31 5 3 5 6 10 60 100
20 or Fewer Artifacts 4 4.5 3 3.4 28 31.5 382 42.7 16 18 893 100.11

Total 21 10.8 41 21.1 40 20.6 48 24.7 44 22.7 194 99.9
Note: As shown above about 66% of the components could be assigned to one of the three time periods. Even though the majority of the components can be dated to a single time period, only 3,453 of the 6,966 historic artifacts (about 50% ) were found at single component sites (see Table 7.12). The total of 6,966 artifacts excludes 112 artifacts at undated assemblages.

1Includes 29SJ 2578, which for this portion of the analysis is assigned to the 1868-1930 time period. See Appendix 7.3.
2Includes site 29SJ 2491, which for this portion of the analysis is assigned to the 1930-1980 time period. See Appendix 7.4.
3Eighty-seven sites had one component with 20 or fewer artifacts, but two (29SJ 2903 and 29SJ 2782) had two components, for a total of 89. See Appendix 7.4.
4The seven sites also had Euro-American artifacts that appeared to be debris from later nearby sites. This material was not included in the 1600-1863 artifact counts.
5Forty-four sites had one component with more than 20 artifacts, but one (29SJ 2885) had two components, for a total of 45. See Appendix 7.5.
