1In order to clarify the relationships of historic artifacts to features, the original field provenience designations (Refuse Scatter 1, Sherd and lithic scatter 1, etc.) have been modified either to indicate which features a historic scatter is associated with, or more commonly, to indicate that the historic artifacts are scattered across the site and are not associated with specific structural features (general site scatter). The unaltered field designations used in an earlier version of this chapter have been retained in brackets below the new designation in order to maintain comparability with Appendix 6.1, Table 2, which relied upon the earlier version for historic refuse provenience descriptions.

2The overall component date takes into account all dating information (prehistoric ceramics, Euro-american artifacts, tree-ring dates, name and date inscriptions, and informant information) and is derived from Appendix 6.1, Table 2. In a few instances, as noted, an alternative or slightly different date interpretation is possible.

329SJ 2446. Gleichman (see Appendices 6.1 and 6.2) gives a date of 1880-1983 for this site based on an earlier version of this chapter. While the site may post-date 1930, there is no basis for extending the occupation to the 1980s.

429Mc 146. The dates are based on historic inscriptions; it is unclear if the Euro-American artifacts are associated.

529Mc 254 is not listed as having a Navajo or historic component by Gleichman (Chapter 6). The only evidence of historic use is the Euro-American refuse.

629Mc 264. Although this site is listed as undated in Appendices 6.1 and 6.2, it is placed in the 1868-1930 time period by Gleichman in Table 6.1, probably based on a 1905 name and date inscription. It is unlikely that the styrofoam is associated with the historic component of this site.

729Mc 270. Gleichman (see Appendices 6.1 and 6.2) gives a date of 1880-1983 for this site based on an earlier version of this chapter. While the site may post-date 1930, there is no basis for extending the occupation to the 1980s.

829Mc 295. The two historic artifacts found at this site are associated with Rooms 3 and 4. Although Room 3 was likely used as a lamb pen, both artifacts probably post-date Navajo use of this site.

929Mc 449. Gleichman (Appendix 6.1, Table 2) does not assign a date to this site. The refuse appears to be more recent than the corral.

1029Mc 468. The Euro-American artifacts dated between 1964-1974 are not associated with a tipi-ring and hearth used by National Park Service survey archaeologists during the summers of 1983 and 1984.

1129Mc 482. The pop-top cans, in addition to being physically separate from the log piles in the wood cutting area, appear to be later (see Appendix 6.1, Table 2).

1229Mc 488. The component is dated by Gleichman (Appendix 6.1, Table 2) based on a 1933++vv tree-ring date associated with Sweat Lodge 1, but the presence of the Zia Polychrome pot drop outside Enclosure 2 may indicate earlier occupation as well.

1329SJ 2848. The historic artifacts appear to be part of a general site scatter, and not Lithic Scatter 1, although this terminology has been retained for consistency with Appendix 6.1, Tables 1 and 2. Gleichman provides a date of 1856- in the appendix tables, based on the beginning date for production of evaporated milk cans, but in the absence of other better dated materials, the component is dated as Unknown.

1429SJ 2883. The absence of Euro-American artifacts at Structure 1 and Hogan 1 in contrast to their presence in the vicinity of Corral 1 may indicate that the corral was built or reused later in time.

15Trail 1 at 29SJ 2903 was added to this site at a later date, and because of this, the trail scatter may physically overlap the previously recorded Sherd Scatter 1. None of the scatters defined at this site are directly associated with the stone feature (a wall segment or corral barricade), although Gleichman associates this feature with the historic artifacts scattered along the trail (See Appendix 6.1, Table 2).

1629SJ 2909. Although recorded as part of separate refuse features (including prehistoric artifacts), the Dinetah sherds and Euro-American items appear to be part of a general site scatter. Appendix 6.1, Table 2 indicates incorrectly that the Dinetah Gray sherds are from Pot Drop 2.

1729SJ 2931. Gleichman (see Appendix 6.1, Table 2) assigns a component date of 1911- based on a tree-ring date of 1911vv, but given the variety of historic ceramics present at the site, earlier occupation also seems likely, so a date of 1800-1911- is indicated here.

1829SJ 2932. Gleichman (Appendix 6.1, Table 2) dates this site to 1812- based on a 1812vv tree-ring date from Hogan 1. If this date is reasonably close to the date of construction of the hogan, the milled wood clearly post-dates the hogan.

1929SJ 2936. The historic artifacts on this site may be scatter from nearby sites 29SJ 2885 and 29SJ 2917.

2029SJ 2950. The historic artifacts associated with Sweat Lodge 1 and the general site scatter are shown incorrectly as being associated with a baking pit in Appendix 6.1, Table 2.

2129SJ 2953. The Dinetah Gray sherds may indicate the presence of an early component not indicated in Appendix 6.1, Table 2.

2229SJ 2956. Although originally placed in Lithic Scatter 1, this lard bucket is not associated with any feature and probably post-dates the occupation of the rest of the site.

2329SJ 2973. Gleichman (see Appendix 6.1, Tables 1 and 2) assigns a date of post-1910 to this road , probably based on the date range of 1910-1950 estimated by the field crew.
