Gleichman (see Appendix 6.1, Table 2) dates the site to 1930-1950 on the basis of rock art, but as the Dinetah Gray pot drop and the pop-top cans indicate, there is probably a long range of intermittent use at this site. The pot drop may be associated with a historic trail. 929SJ 2885. There appear to be two intervals of occupation at this site. The earlier is associated with the historic Navajo and Pueblo pottery and probably includes Hogans 1 and 2 (which had no directly associated artifacts) and Hearth 2. The later occupation, beginning sometime after 1900 is defined by the Euro-American artifacts associated with Hogan 3, but scattered elsewhere as well. The Refuse 1 scatter associated with Fieldhouse 1 includes some of this widely broadcast material. A Navajo informant (see Appendix 8.1)indicated that the site was occupied by her parents who left prior to her birth in 1921. This apparently useful end date is contradicted by a 1925vv dendrochronological date from Hogan 3. 1029SJ 2904. Gleichman (see Appendix 6.1, Table 2) dates this site on the basis of three tree-ring dates associated with the historic road segment, but as the Dinetah Gray sherds, two probable Navajo projectile points, and few Euro-American artifacts suggest earlier intermittent use of the site also occurred. 1129SJ 2917. Gleichman (Table 6.1) identifies two historic components at this site. The first is a single habitation dated to the 1868-1930 period, while the second is a multiple habitation component dated to1930-1980. However, there is no clear artifactual or architectural evidence that one of the hogans is earlier than the others, so if only for lack of better evidence it seems likely that all of the hogans were occupied at roughly the same time period, from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Seven tree-ring dates range from 1895vv to 1924GB. 1229SJ 2930. Gleichman (Table 6.1) identifies both sherd scatter (1700-1850) and rock art (1930-1980) components at this site, and although two time periods appear to be reflected by the artifacts, it is unclear which interval the rock art is associated with. 1329SJ 2941. The Navajo features and artifacts at this component may be associated with 29SJ 2908. 1429SJ 2945. It seems likely that the single can found on the site post-dates the use of Hogans 1 and 2. 1529SJ 2957. The field crew noted that the post-1920 Euro-American artifacts were likely associated with a nearby historic wagon road , rather than indicating reuse of the habitation features. 1629SJ 2959. The post-1926 Euro-American artifacts at this site are probably also associated with the wagon road rather than the habitation features. 1729SJ 2964. Gleichman (Appendix 6.1, Table 2) does not include the Euro-American trash (1930-1950) in her dating of the site. The field crew felt that this trash was washed in (much of it was located in a drainage) from a nearby site, and not associated with the features at 29SJ 2964. 1829SJ 2965. Two intervals of use appear to be represented by the historic pottery and Euro-American artifacts. Gleichman (Appendix 6.1, Table 2) dates the hogans to the later portions of the time spans of the historic ceramics, based in part on a 1898++B tree-ring date from Hogan 1. The Euro-American refuse is diffuse, and with the exception of Hearth 3, is not clearly associated with any features. This general scatter likely represent debris from the long occupation of nearby 29SJ 2966. 1929SJ 2966. Gleichman (Table 6.1) identifies two components at this site. The first a single habitation is assigned a date of 1890-1920, while the second, a multiple habitation site is dated to 1940-1950. While late 19th and early 20th century occupation of the site is certainly possible, the artifact assemblage does not provide much evidence for occupation earlier than the 1920s, a beginning date that is more in line with informant information reported by Brugge (1982: 39) (29SJ 2966 is Brugge’s Site K) and by W. Powers (see Tables 8.1a and 8.1b; Appendix 8.1). Their informant data suggests the site was occupied more or less continually as a winter camp from the early 1930s through the early 1950s. 2029SJ 2968. There are two historic components at this site. The first, a single habitation component, is dated to 1700-1850. The second, consisting of Euro-American refuse, dates to the early 20th century. Refuse Scatter 1 of the refuse component is listed in the ceramic data base as being associated with the historic road bisecting this site, and although the artifacts are of the same general period as those along the road, the refuse feature is not physically associated with the road, nor does it have a clear relationship to any structural feature at this site. It is likely that all of the 20th century artifacts at this site are debris from 29SJ 2966. Refuse Scatter 2, listed in Appendix 6.1, Table 2, is not included here because it is not a historic feature. 2129SJ 2981. The 1880-1974 date range represents a maximum range of occupation. Occupation is likely to have been much more temporally limited, perhaps during the 1920-1940s. The pop-top soda can is almost certainly unrelated to the site features. 2229SJ 2984. The Euro-American manufactured items forming the general site scatter do not appear to be directly associated with any of the Navajo structural features, and likely post-date them. 2329SJ 2985. Tree-ring dates of 1933++vv and 1938v were obtained from wood associated with the wagon road (see also Appendix 6.1, Table 2) passing through this site. The bucket fragment appears to date from the same general time interval and is probably not associated with use of the other Navajo features. 2429SJ 2986. It is likely that there are two intervals of occupation at this site. The first, a pre-20th century occupation is indicated by the Dinetah Gray pottery, while the second, probably post-1920 or 1930 is shown by the Euro-American artifacts. For the most part it is unclear which structural features are associated with each occupation, although tree-ring dates for Hogan 1 and Corral 1 suggest that they belong with the later, 20th century occupation (see Appendix 6.1, Table 2). 2529SJ 2838. This site has two historic components. A rock art component including historic inscriptions is the basis of the 1881-1942 date, while the associated temporary shelter component is dated to a shorter time range of 1930-1950, based on Euro-American artifacts.
